If the owner doesn’t know who is hosting his web site, how can you access his hosting via FTP?
Hello esmi,
I can access his server via ftp because he has provided me with his user name and password.
Since I am moving a Word Press site onto his server, from what I have found out thus far, the easiest way to accomplish this is by using the Cpanel. Unfortuantely he does not have the Cpanel log in information. Typically this would be something such as: http://mywebsitedomain.com:2082. You would then be prompted to enter a user name and password to access the Cpanel. So what he does not have is this info. “http://mywebsitedomain.com:2082”.
He bought the business and the prior owner only provided him with FTP info.
That is pretty much why I need an alternative method of colleting the Word Press files to move them onto his server.
Thank you for your comment though.
Have you tried just using http://mywebsitedomain.com/cpanel and then just using the main FTP username & password? Might be worth a try…
just uploading using ftp will not solve your problem as you need to create database and that can only be done logging in cpanel.
He bought the business and the prior owner only provided him with FTP info.
May be who ever sold him business created a ftp account and did not want him to access cpanel
Hello esmi and govpatel,
You both have good ideas and I thank you very kindly for your time and effort.
I did some legwork (searching) and managed to locate some info. with respects to the server info. In hopes that my efforts may help others I would like to suggest a web portal: http://www.v3whois.com/. From this website one can enter a domain name and retrieve information pertinent to the domain. Once I established an IP address etc. I was then able to locate the hosting server. I then contacted them and was able to resolve a Cpanel of sorts. (Very old version).
I had only to produce the user name and password and was then logged into the File Manager of the server. In terms of following the Word Press suggested steps to place the Word Press site onto the other server, this method was not the optimal way of doing things, however it at least gave me access to the PHP area and the file manager.
I am not sure if this will be the answer, but I have taken the first few steps in regards to copying and backing up all the work I did with the Word Press build. I will initiate the transfer over the weekend with fingers crossed and hope I do ok.
Again, thank you esmi and govpatel for your insight, advice and for your time. It has been very much appreciated and I would be more than happy to let you know how I make out and of course share it with others who may be in the same situation as myself.
Thank you.
David
