My admin dashboard consists only of [linked] text - in one tall column all the way down the page. Initially I thought I was not code saavy enough to figure out the whole thing - I think instead some visual component is missing bc all I have found in my search for help is that the dashboard is pretty and user friendly. What's wrong?

I'm having a similar problem. I'm new to wordpress...how do you remove the old admin file and upload just thew admin file again?

Sorry...typo in last post. How do you upload just the new /wp-admin file with re-installing all of wordpress and losing my themes?

@matt, your theme is in wp-content/themes/<yourthemename>. So long as you don't overwrite that, your theme is safe. You should back it up though. Its just good habit. What you need to upload is in /wp-admin-- not even in the wp-contents folder much less the wp-contents/themes one. To upload it, you need to...
    1) login via FTP (my preference) or find your host's file manager if there is one
    2) browse to your local copy of WordPress
    3) find the wp-admin folder, select it, but don't browse into it. You want to upload the whole folder.
    4) Now browse the remote server until you see the wp-admin folder. Don't browse into that folder though.
    5) Now upload the wp-admin folder you selected previously in step 3 Most FTP has a fairly obvious 'upload' button.
    5) If you screw something up, don't worry about it because you backed up your theme already anyway, right? Just start over, deleting whatever it was you put in the wrong place.

what's the actual process of uploading the new /wp-admin file? All I ever done so far is the initial install of wordpress.

I am a writer. Usually hire someone to do this stuff. All was going well. I even bought WordPress 101 to learn how to do all this right (I am completely NOT tech-savvy). But after I logged off and then logged back on - it wouldn't recognize me. So I got a new password. I then changed back to my original. I made my computer remember it. But now I no longer have access to my admin page. I can't find admin (cookies are enabled). I don't know how to upload the new /wp-admin file. I have no idea what that means or where to start. I'm TOTALLY FRUSTRATED! Help! Please....

Oh and PS - I when I try to log on from scratch (not from computer that remembers my login) the system says my user name doesn't exist - which it does. Ughhhhhhh! =(

My dashboard has disappeared again. Is this a common problem that will keep recurring? I don't understand how to upload the admin file. I can find it but I am completely computer illiterate. What is FTP?
Please help this is really frustrating, as it's the second time in a week that the dashboard has gone. No-one else I know has encountered this problem.

I made a change to my Heading (on my General page on my dashboard)) and when I updated it I got an "OOPS!!! Page not found" error.

Now I can't seem to even FIND my dashboard!

When you go to my site http://www.encorelakeshore.com the result is what looks like a sitemap. encorelakeshore.com/wp-admin results in the same "OOPS!!!" error... HELP!

I had the same problem with dashboard at first - javascript wasnt working. Everything was just in one column and nothing really worked.

I was using firefox, which apparently doesn't respond well to wordpress. I then switched over to IE and that worked fine. Also, when you're in IE (or some have had success with Safari) try this to make the javascript work:

    Plugins<
    Find new<
    search - "Google libraries"
then install that plugin. It should fix all, if not, most of your javascript problems. worked for me.

I didn't have the same problem as you.

For me it was Javascript not working anywhere in my dashboard. sorry!

I'm also having the same problem everyone is describing. This dashboard just appears as link down the side of the page, but none of the links seem to work and this happens in various browsers. I've reinstalled the admin file, reinstalled the JS files (since there are 2 js problems listed) but nothing has worked.

I'm looking into downgrading if I can figure out how to do that without messing up anything, but before I do I thought I'd check to see if a fix has been found.

I am following this thread carefully. I have a dashboard issue, very similar, but not exactly the same. I don't see the dashboard at all for my main site.

I run 14 WordPress sites. All are on WP 2.9.0 at present, except the one giving me trouble. That one is "upgraded" to WP 2.9.1. I completed the upgrade (using automatic method, after backups), then went into the dashboard to do maintenance.

    No dice.

I'm using Firefox, latest version I know of (3.5.7; automatically updated).

First, I logged into my site. That worked well, and recognized me properly. Then I clicked on the Dashboard link in my sidebar login space.

I saw the dashboard start up, but in less than a second it disappeared. The tab went from showing "Dashboard" to showing the raw URL. That tab continued to show the action as incomplete, even after the bottom notification banner said it was Done. The displayed URL is correct.

I tried both the admin user, and my own user w/ admin status. Again, no dice. I hit the back button on the browser, and it appears to be stuck on the blank page. If I hit the back button twice quickly, it goes all the way back to my blog site. (www.chileunderground.com)

I downloaded a new package of WP 2.9.1, latest stable code. I replaced the wp-admin files and folder, leaving the rest of the install intact. I didn't attempt any edits of the database.

I next tried Internet Explorer 8, and everything is fine over there. Apparently, Firefox 3.5.7 and WP 2.9.1 don't play together nicely. I'm trying to get Firefox 3.6, but it's slow downloading; I'll post on that experiment later.

All my WP 2.9.0 installations are fine. I won't update any of them until this issue is resolved.

Okay, I got Firefox 3.6 running, finally. I tried to go to the Dashboard, and got exactly the same response as with Firefox 3.5.7. That is:

Screen shows the Dashboard for a split second.
Screen goes white, status line (bottom left) shows Done.
Tab shows the URL, with the "still downloading" flying circle active.

Explorer 8 has no trouble showing the dashboard on any of my installations, whether WP 2.9.0 or 2.9.1.

I'd prefer to be on Firefox. Should this be referred to Mozilla in some way?

I'd say, go into your cookies and delete the one for this site giving you trouble... delete the cache too while you at it... then try again.

MrkingID, I cleared cookies and caches, and that didn't fix anything that I could see. So I started poking around in the files themselves. I found the trouble, and it's very serious; at least for me. My site, hosted by GoDaddy, was hacked. (I don't believe GoDaddy is necessarily culpable; but I have 14 sites with them, and I know they have a LOT of WP sites hosted.)

All the .php files had a line of code added at the top. This line is way too long to reproduce here. That line, which contained 'decode=" and a bunch of stuff, was invoking some hacker's site, blocking everything I tried to do.

Fortunately, I had a clean backup at the WP 2.8.5 stage. So I wiped out the files (not the database or graphics, stuff like that), and reloaded. THEN I got a new copy of 2.9.1 and checked all the .php files in there. They appeared fine, so I upgraded manually.

So far, the site is behaving as I expect, and in all browsers.

Watch your status bar at the bottom of the browser while you invoke the Dashboard. If it's trying to load some unknown site, please make it stop and go fix your site. Or look in some .php files using FileZilla or similar and see if you're infected.

I don't know if anything in my database is messed up. I've sequestered the current copy, and I've got a recent backup handy, just in case. More disturbing to me is the "coincidence" that my upgrading to 2.9.1 aligned perfectly with this problem.

Now I gotta go check (and maybe rebuild) all the other WP 2.9 sites I have...
