   I just completely reinstalled wordpress to the latest version.
   The reason I did this is because of memory problems and no access to permalinks. I tried everything out there and nothing helped. So I decided to reinstall, in the process losing a lot of data because back up was not working either.

   Now I reinstalled WordPress 3.0 and still have no access to permalinks. I am now doing it again. No active plugins, no nothing, just a fresh install. I even sent the entire directory to 777 permissions to make sure it was all open and still nothing.

   After I went the 777 route I could only access the empty blog at the TLD but not the admin page, anything other than TLD caused a 500 error.

   Can someone please try to help me out with this?

   Well, the memory issue is now taken care of, I am no longer seeing any errors. But now on a completely clean install I still get nothing with permalinks.

   When I go to Settings>Permalinks, all I get is a gray background with all else on the left.

   Take a look at these screen shots

   First image is from the top, the second is the rest from that point on to the bottom.

   I've been with the same host of a very long time, and I've never had these problems before. What's mind boggling is that this is a clean install.

   I deleted everything including a .htaccess, I now created a new .htaccess file but it is empty, I was hoping WP settings would fill it with whatever necessary.

   If not, what should I manually enter into it?

   Have you installed on a new and clean database?

   Check the source code for any errors that might be printed. Is this the only thing that doesn't work?

   Yes, I installed on a new DB, checked for errors, nothing, it's off because it's a clean install.

   When I load an old backup file, it all goes back to issues with memory exhausted error but when I don't, memory is all good but I still can't access permalinks.

   In fact, I installed WP 3.0 on a different host and same problem.
   I had this issue in the past with many of the same errors popping up, so I figured it must be a bad plug in, now I've eliminated this completely and still same issue.

   Any help?

   I can do a clean install of 3.0 and still can't access permalinks?

   I have checked the source when I install a fresh copy and there are no issues that I can see. It's a fresh copy.

   What could this be?

   So I reinstalled into a different directory as in http://www.domain.com/blog rather than just root.
   I installed 2.9.2 went to permalinks and it sort of worked.
   It gave me the typical "WordPress uses dots, dashes, etc, etc" but would not actually display the options, once I upgraded (auto update) to 3.0 I get the same blank screen as before.

   If anyone has any ideas, it would be great.
