NextGEN Gallery: I think is rubbish! What am I missing? (5 posts)

I must have tried the NextGEN Gallery for the 10th time now

    I must be missing something
Nearly 1300 feedbacks with an overall average of 4 stars out of 5 - that's a pretty good score I would say
    + a billion downloads

Each and every time I have tested all I can see are lame/poor examples on their website

I've decided: I must be wrong - I must be missing something
NextGEN Gallery must be awesome - why would it have sooo many downloads and feedbacks otherwise?

I must be the last one on earth to know the secret!
    Someone: let me know!!

    Thanks

    Omar

Not sure if one should really reply to your thread... but I think it depends on what you're looking for in a gallery.

For one of my sites, I opted to use ZenPhoto (standalone gallery) because I am the only one running the site so it's easier just to insert photos into posts from there and keep a separate 'gallery' section.

However, for other sites I do see the appeal and functionality of NextGEN. Why? Because it's integrated with WordPress and is also actively maintained.

This means that when I build sites for other people, they don't need to know how to use an external gallery: they just need to login to WordPress, upload and away they go. This is a complex functionality that I think is missing from WordPress, but it doesn't need to be there as not everyone needs a gallery for their WP installation, hence NextGEN is ideal as an add-on.

I only use the basic functionality - but there are many other functions and tricks that others use.

My question to you would be: what are you looking to do or what are you looking for in a gallery?

my question wasnt meant to be offensive in anyway - just typing too quickly - as i said: my assumption is that i must be wrong and missing something - since the rest of the world has downloaded and uis using

what i want: for it to look good and have a very subtle animation or 2
apart from the nice light box expanding feature, i saw another gallery somewhere else, where when you put the mouse over the thumbnails, they moved up a little and when the mouse was moved away, they moved back into place - looked really neat (this wasn't a word press website)

    Thanks for the clarification. :)

I think the first part of 'looking good' will have to come from the CSS styling (there might be some CSS style suggestions specifically for NextGEN that you might be able to find) and for the next part - if you happen to recall which website it was from, you could probably look at the source and see if you can trace the name of the effect and see if there is one for NextGEN already. If not, and you're the only one maintaining the gallery, you could consider other plugins that simply offer front-end features rather than the more robust back-end features that NextGEN has.
