Hello!
Please help me with this problem. I have just updated my nextgen gallery. After updating, I already have difficulties uploading pictures and If ever the pictures are successfully uploaded, no thumbnails are generated.
I went to manage gallery and manually updated thumbnail but it always says "error updating thumbnail".
Chmod is already set to 777. With the previous version of nextgen everything works perfect but with this upgrade, I can't seem to solve the problem

I guess I'm too late for you, anyway, my problem was with permissions.
If you have FTP access, go to /wp-content/gallery/ (if that's the path to your gallery) right click gallery and change file permission (recurse into subdirectories) to 777.
This way if you create any other galleries, you shouldn't have problems with this error again... Hopefully...
