I don't think so.
The previous_post_link and its twin is doing what earlier the page_nav_link used to do: displaying the "Previous posts" link on the index when you have more posts than the number set to be shown.
Actually both the "old" and this newer function are present in the `wp-includes/template-functions-links.php

About "page_nav_link" probably you ment "posts_nav_link", and it is nicely explained in codex.
