Also killed the feed on our school PTA web site.
Widget on the home page shows error message now:
    http://ivepta.org/

    Main feed page:
    http://ivepta.org/news/

are you using the shortcode and also using the clean_separated template? If so, there was a bug in that and I posted a new version here:

Yes. Thanks… I’ll check out that new version.

That new template file fixed the problems on the music-tech site, but not on the IVE PTA site… both the widget on the home page as well as the main news archive still say there is a problem with the feed, but if I copy the feed URL into Firfox, I’m able to see the feed. So, it’s not a feed issue (although it is quite slow responding, so maybe it’s timing out??) — here is the feed, which is the PTA News blast archive from MailChimp:

yes, the problem is mostly likely it’s timing out….the only way around this is to use the beta version of the plugin because right now the plugin is trying to pull in the feed in real time – if the feed is slow, it creates problems. Beta version does this in the background and all feeds are stored in the database.

let me know if you want to try this.

Sure, I’ll try out the beta. We’re on a shared server, and today the whole site seems extremely slow.

Also something weird going on with the widget on the home page. The div for your widget is not getting closed before the volunteer opportunities widget that appears below it, so the volunteer widget is getting indented like a sub-div of your RSS importer widget. Perhaps that’s because it’s timing out or somehow not finding the feed?

actually, that’s the div put in by wordpress….there is no closing div because of the error message that is being generated by simplepie that is trying to read the feed.

Here is the beta version – if you want to preserve the feeds you have in the prior version, watch this video for how to comment out the uninstall file before deleting the current version (make sure you delete the current version before uploading this one via the wordpress admin).

    Thanks.

Before I installed the beta, I installed the latest update and the plugin was grabbing the feeds for the widget OK, but still not able to get them on the news page.

So, I modified your uninstall file to preserve options, and installed the beta. I’m able to see the feed now on both the widget and the news page. However, now the link/window settings on the widget no longer work. We liked the lightbox method of opening a feed, but that doesn’t work now. Tried setting it to “New Window”, but it still opens in the same window.

    Thanks! That fixed it.

The Feed validator definitely doesn’t like the feed generated by MailChimp, but at least everything is back to working now.

    (@amweiss98)

ok…yes, if the feed validator doesn’t like it then that’s a problem MailChimp needs to fix…glad it’s working though.

I ended up removing your plugin from the IVE PTA site as it was causing the home page to take more than 10 seconds to load, even with the new beta version you sent me. Just taking to long to try to grab that feed that is not conforming to what simple-pie expects. I found another simple plugin that works for the modest needs of that web site, Mailchimp Campaign Archive… the shortcode for that works in widget section also, and doesn’t seem to slow the site down at all.

Your plugin still works great on my Music-And-Technology.com site, which is pulling in and consolidating several industry feeds… no slow downs there. So, just something about that Mailchimp list archive that yours doesn’t like and makes it slow way down.

Thanks for all the speedy help, though! Very much appreciated!

ok..well, I optimized the widget again, and made the timeout 20 secs (since that feed is very slow). If you want to give the plugin another try, you can pick up the newest version here:

Thanks for doing that. I may try it again at some point in the future. However, for the very simple needs on the PTA site, that new Mailchimp Campaign Archive plugin handles it just fine, and has a much smaller footprint.

Your plugin rocks, and is awesome for my other site which pulls in quite a few different RSS feeds, and I love the lightbox popup. I will definitely continue to use it there.
