• I’ve noticed that a lot of the example WordPress websites have the “3 column” layout. I much prefer webpages which change and automatically resize to fit the size of the user’s web browser window. Can this be done by editing the WP CSS?
How easy is it to create my own webpage layout for the WP webpages? Is this what is called a “template”?

  • Yes it is. And it is very difficult to do in three columns if you want a flexible width layout. You would need to find one you liked and then graft it onto the WordPress interface.

What do you mean by graft it onto the WordPress Interface – is this equivalent to rebuilding the current index.php file?

Yes. The xhtml will need to reworked around the php. A little.

What proportion of the current WordPress users develop customized index.php files? (verses using the standard version provided with the install?)
If I heavily customize this file, does that create problems with future upgrades? or is the file just provided as an sample?

Any one with more than a basic command of html can be almost guaranteed to have hacked their index files to death . It is no fun if you don’t.
For upgrades if the index is compatible we just reinstall our current version or
we edit as necessary. It is only one file. It is a small price to pay for infinite opportunities to hack, and for being on the bleeding edge (or over it ) 🙂
