I am beginning to create/redesign websites for local businesses. I have experience with Squarespace but have decided to learn WordPress as well. I have a job that will require a total redesign. I will be redoing a site currently in vBulletin to WordPress. The client would like to keep his current host. What is the best way of going about this? Should/Can I design the site on my host then transfer it to his? Once the new site is built, and I point the domain to that site, am I right to assume that it may take a short-term hit in search rankings? If so, is there anything I can do to avoid it?

Am I going about this the right way and asking the right questions? Anything I'm missing?

    Thank you in advance!

If it was me, I'd build my WordPress site on your client's host now, in a folder off the root so that it does not disturb the current web site. Once you want to go live and kill the customer's existing web site, follow this: http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory#Using_a_pre-existing_subdirectory_install

Although WordPress is pretty good about tolerating differences in hosting environments, why not reduce that exposure?

I can't speak to Search Rankings.
