• Hi. I’m on a Mac with OS 10.6.3. I downloaded WordPress version 3.1. I unzipped everything into a folder called wordpress on my desktop. I’m trying to follow the “Famous 5-minute install”. In step 2 it says to

    Open wp-admin/install.php in your browser

I’m using Firefox 3.6.27. I click on File -> Open File and go to the wordpress folder on my desktop and select the wp-admin/install.php file. Firefox brings up a window asking me to choose what to open it with. I choose Firefox and click on OK. But, I just get the same thing again.

I tried step 2.1 through 2.3 and created the “wp-config.php” file using TextEdit, and tried to open it, but keep getting the same thing as before where it keeps asking me to choose what to open it with. In step 2.2 it says to save the file as wp-config.php, which I did, then “upload it”. What exactly do I do here? Upload it where?

  • WordPress is meant to be installed on a web server. You need to upload the files to a web server.

As Tim said wordpress is server program to create websites/blogs and for that as you are using Mac you need to install Mamp server if you want to learn how to use wordpress before you get a host account.

    OK, thanks.

I don’t own the web site, I’m just helping out. I’ve been using FileZilla to download a web page, modify it in HTML using Komodo Edit, then upload it with FileZilla. This is fine for some things, but to do much I need a way to edit web pages without having to do it all in HTML.

I downloaded the whole website to a folder on my mac. What would be really nice is if there was a way to view and edit the web site locally and be able to modify them easier, that is not HTML for everything but actually view the pages as they would look, then upload the pages I make changes to. Is there any way to do that?

WordPress is a server program and you can manage your website from the program on server or locally you will need learn how to use the program and I recommend that you read

    and see how wordpress works

OK, I’ll read that. Thanks for helping me. If you don’t mind, please let me repeat back to you guys how this works to make sure I understand it.

I have to upload WordPress to the server and install it on the server. Then, I can develop the web pages locally and upload them to the server to go live. Correct?

If so, then I need to get permission from the owner before I install any software on their server. So far I’ve just been modify a page here and there and uploading it.

    Thanks again!

Installing Mamp on your computer is for just working locally on wordpress to test it out you can work on wordpress directly on server so that you do have to do any downloading or uploading is your choice.
