Newbie asks: Am I taking the right approach in setting up my site? (6 posts)

I am looking to replace my existing non-WordPress website with a nicer version using WordPress.

I've started a site on WordPress.com, with the expectation that I would finish the design and then port it to my domain.

Is this really the way to go? Will my blog have greater flexibility (than allowed by WordPress.com) when I move it? Should I just start with WordPress.org? Can I use WordPress.org without taking down my existing site?

Any help and advice greatly appreciated.

[Dammit, Jim, I'm a lawyer, not a website designer!]

You can only export content from WordPress.COM, so you won't get ANY of whatever design you've done.

If you want to be on a self-hosted WP.ORG site, definitely start there. It has much greater flexibility, but also more "responsibility."

You can use both but not with the same domain name at the same time.

You might want to develop the new site in a sub-directory of your existing domain - see:

    Thanks, yogi.
But how do I design and set up a new WP.org site without losing my old site?
