    Hello all,
I am setting up a website for our church and have decided to go with WordPress.

I registered the domain, got a hosting package through 1and1.com and followed all of the instructions from WordPress. I can now log in to the dashboard via wp-admin/index.php and edit content and other info but cannot figure out how to get it to show up even though the dashboard shows 3 pages published, It still looks like an unused domain.

If you could help, or at least point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it.

    - Will

    Hi

It can take 12 - 24 hours for a newly registered domain to appear around the world. Did you just do all of that today?

also, on 1 and 1 you will need to add this to your .htaccess in the root
    AddType x-mapp-php5 .php

@ stvwlf- no, the domain was registered about a week ago and for a few days I even had a trial site published using 1and1's website builder for a little while but took it down completely now.

@samboll- is there anyway you could dumb it down a little more for me. Exactly where do I go to edit this file b/c I'm looking through the FTP and don't see any .htaccess in the root file.

    Thanks Again guys!

Also looking through the 1and1 control panel and not seeing anywhere I can do this either

you may need to set your ftp client to "show hidden files"
you may not have an .htaccess yet
if not - open notepad or similar and add the above line to it -save as .htaccess and upload it to root of your site (note , some text editors append .txt to end of .htaccess - just upload it and rename to just .htaccess with ftp client)

ok I used TextEdit (Mac) and created the file just like you said.
I now have a file named .htaccess which shows as a hidden file type "htaccess" under the root directory.

no matter what I do now (I tried adding and taking out spaces, etc) I keep getting a 500 Internal server error

    1) this .htaccess file should be in the same folder that WordPress is installed in

    2) if it is and still having that problem, please post back exactly what is in the .htaccess file

currently it reads just as it was copy/pasted from above

    AddType x-mapp-php5 .php

I have also tried the following

    AddTypex-mapp-php5.php
    x-mapp-php5 .php
    x-mapp-php5.php

I know someone is probably laughing at how simple this is and how stupid i must be but I just cannot get it to work. Thank you for your patience.

    Hi

500 errors are usually related to htaccess errors.

Sounds like what you have done is correct. You may want to contact 1&1 tech support & ask them to look at your setup. Its difficult to diagnose without being able to see your setup, which they can see.

No one is laughing, because although it will likely turn out to be a little thing that is under your nose, you don't see it so how are you supposed to know.

Also, notify 1&1 that before the 500 error, you were seeing 1&1's "domain has been registered" page and not your site.

Problem Solved. Thanks again everyone, it turns out that I was supposed to delete the file "index.html" out of the root directory and didn't do it. Once I removed that and the .htaccess the site showed up (unformatted of course, but at least it's there)

    Thanks again!
