• If you’re running a podcast through WordPress, I could use your help testing the latest version of the wp-ipodcatter plugin for making a iTunes compatible feed (including keywords, duration, and block).

The latest version also includes an admin panel under the WordPress Options tab for setting itunes:subtitle, default categories, and cover images.

As an added bonus, you can also turn your blog’s comment feed into a podcast.

JessieB, if you missed it, ipodcatter looks in the directory you spec in the ‘Local path to audio files’ field at the bottom of the WP-iPodCatter options panel.

    Garrick –
Hey – I have recently opted to redirect all my feed traffic to http://feeds.feedburner.com/highestpraise because of their tracking/stats, etc.

I’m using the od_feedburner.php plugin, and it works great by changing ALL the feed links in WordPress to redirect to my feedburner URL.

HOWEVER, the old, original /?feed=rss2 file will NOT redirect. You can type it in manually, and it still loads … we’ve modified and tweaked the .htaccess file until we’re nuts … and I began to wonder if your plugin was perhaps overriding something, or mixing it up – so when I de-activated the iPodCatter plugin, sure enough .. the /?feed=rss2 was no longer valid – it would not parse (but still didn’t redirect”

Any clue about the compatability between these two plugins. And also – if I were to continue using feedburner, with their Smartcast option turned “on” – do I still need to use the ipodcatter plugin?

I’ve got a great listing and ranking in the ITunes Podcast directory, and do NOT wanna risk losing it!

    Thanks,
    FRED

Correct, the feed wouldn’t parse with the plugin turned off. With the plugin turned off, the tags written by the plugin would be omitted, making an invalid feed. There’s nothing that I know of preventing you from using Feedburner’s smartcast & wp-ipodcatter together. If anything, they work together making sure all the bases are covered.

here is the error message i get:

The following tags were not closed: rss, channel, item. Error processing resource ‘http://www.bibbsrevenge.com/?feed=rss2’.

    Any ideas ?

garybibb, I ran your feed through feedvalidator.org and received the following:
fatal error: return_itunes_dur(): Failed opening required ‘getid3/getid3.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/local/lib/php’)

WP-iPodCatter is looking for the getid3 directory in the plugins directory. Upload it (it’s included in the wp-ipodcatter.zip) and the feed should be valid.

I am getting the following message as well at Nobody likes Onions.

    Xml Data error ‘80040002’
Unable to parse Xml: System error: -2147012890.
    /feedcheck/incRSS.asp, line 135

    Also, at FeedValidator.com, I get:
    “Undefined channel element: itunes:link”

It has something to do with the 300 X 300 pixel image link on line 32. Both previews open up fine in the WP Options panel though.

Garrick, you have been very helpful here, but I still do not know what this means. Once posted in iTunes, is there a way to go back into iTunes and modify any of the information. Only asking so that I can test it IRL. 🙂

    Thanks alot!

    -trav

I deleted and then re-uploaded everything. Works better but now I get these error messages:

line 32, column 4: Undefined channel element: itunes:link [help]

    <itunes:link rel=”image” type=”video/jpeg” href=”http://www.bibbsrevenge … ^
line 61, column 27: Invalid duration: “” (4 occurrences) [help]

    <itunes:duration></itunes:duration> ^
line 138, column 0: length of 4303 exceeds the maximum allowable for itunes:summary of 4000 [help]

    </itunes:summary>

Garrick, you the man. Thanks for the plugin and the quick response.

garybibb, the ‘undefined channel element’ is a known issue betwen the iTunes spec and FeedValidators implementation of it (i.e. no worries on that one).

For the itunes:duration tag, check if the duration field in the post’s edit form has a value in it – if not, try entering one in manually.

For the itunes:summary – try writing less 🙂 – but seriously. The values for itunes:summary are pulled from the post’s description. Looks like I need to add a limit on that within the plugin.

I installed the plugin- works great so far, so thanks for that!
However, I have had one issue since the install. When I use the blog by email function, WordPress is no longer posting my emailed posts. I can see the email in the mailbox for my “secret email,” but when I go to mydomain.com/wp-mail.php it just says that there is no mail.
None of my blog by email settings were changed in my admin panel in case anyone was going to suggest looking at that first 🙂

Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

pibby, interesting. If you turn off wp-ipodcatter, does blog-by-email work?

Now that you mention it garrick, it doesn’t seem to work even with the plugin deactivated. It was working 4 days ago, the mail is making it to the mailbox, but “there doesn’t seem to be any mail.” Argh!
I replaced the rss files that were provided with the plugin, I can’t imagine that would have had any effect on the email?

All is well, it turns out another user changed the password of the blog by email account.
Now back to the podcasting! I <3 garrick

Garrick, looking for some help on cleaning out my database. I have thousands upon thousands of itunes:duration tags in each of my posts (due to a previously reported problem). As you can imagine, it is taking light years to load the rss feed and iTunes is now timing out trying to read my feed. I can not even edit a post in my browser – it crashes trying to load a post. How can I get at that database and remove all of those duration tags?

cwachs – the easiest way to strip out all those blank records is through something like phpMyAdmin. I haven’t been able to get weddingcast to load either. I might recommend turning off all the activated plugins and see if that changes performance.
