I have hundreds of users that have registered for my blog. Once upon a time I had one of those widgets that makes it easy to add someone, but no one real ever seemed to join so much, much, much later I took it down.
but I still get notifications of new users (as in, spammers) all the time. I can't figure out how. How can I turn these off?
This seems like a stupid question but I can't find a way to close adding new users anywhere in the settings or under users. I'm a recent convert to version 3, tho, so I am probably just missing it.
In your settings page in the dashboard under General Setting untick to the box that says "Anyone can register" in the membership section.

God. I had a feeling it was something so simple. OK, thanks. I am an idiot. I swear I did go looking.
I had the same thing happen. After I disabled user registration, I used this plugin to clean up my inactive users: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/inactive-user-deleter/
Just make sure to back up your database before you do this, incase something goes wrong!
