Hi, I got an email from Word Press stating that I have a new user registration. I didn’t know users could register on my site, and as their username choice is “admin99” it has me a bit freaked out.

Is someone trying to get admin rights to my blog?

    The message is

New user registration on your site ChumpLady.com:

    Username: adm99

    E-mail: [ email redacted ]

    ______________

    Thanks for any help.

Forgot to add, I actually got two of these messages, same email user. The other username is admin26.

You have user registration turned on. Anybody can register on your site. Go into your settings and turn registration off if you want it off.

Thanks Otto. Hey, dumb question, but is there any harm in turning off user registration? People can still make comments and such?

As long as you have it set to not require people to be logged in to comment, then sure they can.

Surprised me too when this happened. Found the control, under Settings/General Settings/Membership. Decided yes, I do want it “anyone can register,” with default role “subscriber.” So that’s all okay.

But! where do people do this registering? I can’t find it on my site

On your wp-login.php page, there’s a “Register” link.

Hi, I am having a similar issue. When I googled the email address that was used to sign-up for my site, I came across this thread. It had the same email address in the results page, but when I came to this thread the email address had been redacted. They’ll probably redact this one too, but I wanted to at least notify everyone that this does not appear to be an isolated incident. For future reference, the gmail address referenced a certain piece of weaponry used by submarines.

    The signup said this:

New user registration on your site American School Choice:

    Username: adm70

E-mail: [ Email redacted. Could you please stop posting email addresses? ]

Had the same thing on my site yesterday. User name admin22 and same email address. Naturally with the user of “admin” I was somewhat inquisitive especially with no user name attached. Searching it came up as a MP3 music download site. I have removed it as a user from my blog.

I welcome user registrations, but also go directly to see who is registered and promptly delete those that are not deemed value added to the collective group of blog audience.

I recommend you set you ensure your settings for new registrants are set to subscriber only. You can change them alter to authors or even admins if you so choose.
