New upload feature - problem (79 posts)

None of the solutions thus far addresses the problem faced with
people who do NOT use the wp editor at all and use a third party
    editor like Rocket Post.

In version 1.5 I simply enable file uploading
fillout the directory path in the dashboard, make sure that
    directory is writable

Configue my editor rocket post to the same upload directory as my
dashboard and I'm good to go!

In version 2.0 this will not work! No matter what folder I select,
or what permissions I set, wp only allows uploads through it's
    upload.php

There needs to be a way to upload images remotely without ftp
    just like version 1.5!!!!!!

I had to give up and switch back to version 1.5.

Version 2.0 is designed for (no offense) idiots! It assumes you
only have one blog or a few blogs and will only use the wp editor!

There needs to be way to enable and disable the current method,
be able to switch to the version 1.5 method and completely bypass
the new uploader method so people who do use third part editors
    can still post images automatically.

    exactly!!!

there should be a combination of the old and new where everything is configurable and optional, thereby making it still easy to use for newbies and likable for more advanced users...

I even tried replacing the xmlrps.php file from 1.5 to 2.0
no go, I get the message, uploads are not allowed on this blog!

I sure hope the programmers are reading this thread.

because if you use a third party editor, you can't use wp version 2.0, which makes it the ONLY platform unusable by third party editors.

I think Matt and his team are working on these issues. Please, just be patience and consider that the 2.0 version is just, so far, a stable version which not always means "final". Actually, there's no an official public annoucement about the release, at least not written on the WP Blog that is expected to be the "official word".

All of this was caused because we users carried the news too quickly and maybe yes, a more extensive beta testing... who knows. =(

I had a similar post in another thread ...

Regardless of the tone of BudWiser's comments, he's pretty much on the mark. In fact, it seems like I was able to post images remotely (in my case with Qumana, who I work for) on my wp.com blogs ...

So this is something I'd like to see addressed. While experienced users might be able to tweak their settings or use a different plugin, a lot of users, especially wp.com users, won't be able to.

From my basic experiments using Qumana ... it looks like you just get a 500 server non-response error. Like the remote client is asking, "Hey where should I put this?" and the server isn't responding to it.

Some kind of update appears to be required at the wp level, something that would handle it.

trishussey were you able to some how get Qumana to post images to
2.0? If so, how? I've set up a test blog just to try to figure out a work around if there is one.

Yes ... I just found a simple work around from our competitor Ecto (kudos to them).

    http://ecto.kung-foo.tv/archives/001602.php

I just tested it and it seems to work.

This fix requires two edits in the wp-includes/functions-post.php file. The other option running around (I haven't tried yet) is using xmlrpc.php file from an earlier beta of WP 2.

Word from Ecto is that WP will be reverting to the old behaviour for uploads ... WP folks ... could you e-mail me with a confirmation? Thx.

Hopefully they can combine the old and new. If so, it would be a very useful and great feature in wordpress

Kahil ... I completely agree. The best of both would be perfect. The new organizer is nice ... if we can get the two combined ... aswesome, freakin' awesome.

i'd like to keep the gallery idea, but have everything configurable. the default would be set to options for maximum easiness, for those who are new. and then there would be a way for those more advanced to set things up the way they like.

things like choosing the upload directory. having more than one upload directory to choose from. have the option of creating the thumbnails or not. have it so that when you click on the image in the gallery, you don't get the lil popup, you get to choose the options from a form with radials or check boxes (this cause my security features depending on what computer i am on prevents it). and then, the ability to add other options to the code, like to set the class of the image (i.e. alignright, alignleft, centered, etc) and then click a button to add it to the post/page.

so in short, lol...a combination of the old and new.....

trishussey, the beta 2 xmlrpc file doesn't work for me using Rocket
Post or Qumana. I get error message indicate uploads are not
    allowed.

Have not tried the hacks, will wait for a official revision.

Hopefully this will be fixed soon.

I haven't tried the xmlrpc myself either ... I did the hack myself.

And I hope that we get an official fix too ... and for WP.com as well.

Kahil - I am having the same problem with the custom image menu not showing. It will not show in either firefox 1.5 or internet explorer. I do get a javascript error when I click on the image regarding "doPopup is not defined." Can you share what you did to fix this?

    Live_4U/anyone else:

i fixed the destination path for my uploads like you said and all is working well but i was wondering if there's a way to set a field so i can choose to make a folder for groups of pics. like images/wp/ is the original destination and i want a folder for "images/wp/beachpics" for like 6 photos i took while at the beach. is this possible without having to do it manually?

i'm having the problem Kahil was having now. I can get the edit options (link/delete/thumbnail or original) to come up on the all images located on the SECOND page (by clicking next) but not the first. so i can't do anything with them. sigh.

LIVE 4U's solution (editing inline-uploading.php) doesnt seem to work for WP 2.0.1. any ideas?

Is there any way to get the photos uploaded via the uploader to not have a post ID that messes up the ordering of everything? I imported and then uploaded all of my photos, and my post IDs jumped from 408-730. If there's a way around it, I'd like to clear the databases and start over.

Further to my last post I have done some digging around and found, that by changing from the WYSIWYG editor to 1.5 style editor via your admin panel 'users' then 'your profile' and under 'personal options' at the bottom of the screen un check the 'Use the visual rich editor when writing' box. This then gives you the old style write page with link boxes. Click on img box enter full URL of your image. Next box enter description of image for alt tag.Click ok and in goes the link. You could also under admin and then options and then miscellaneous change to full URL of where you want your image files stored. The default is wp-content/uploads.
    This works well for me.
