I'm sorry, I'm sure this is a stupid question but I'm new to WP and I'm very lost. I want to edit my templates and it says "If this file was writable you could edit it." Can somebody please tell me how I can fix this so I can edit? I tried following the instructions on changing permissions and it just messed everything up so I had to delete everything and re-install.

    http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/ftp/

The above pages show how to do that with some different ftp clients.
If they make no sense, post back :)

I didn't have to upload with my ftp. My server offers free installation of WP. It looks like the default set all my permissions to 755. When I tried before to set them to 766, it really messed everything up and I was unable to go to my admin page. Everything else seems to be working, I just can't edit my templates.

Your host should offer a cpanel / file manager.

The folders are generally 755, the files will be 644.
It's all the files in the theme directory that need making 666

    Thanks! That did the trick.
