New themes display as blank white screen?

I have downloaded a few themes (one I really love!) that have worked for other people, but only show up as a blank white screen in preview mode. I wouldn’t really care, except one is a recent upgrade to my currently installed theme, and the revision is exactly what I need.

I’m a newbie to WordPress, so if this is a “duh” question, my apologies.
