• Hi there,

    I started a new blog http://makemachine.net a couple of months ago and have been watching the stats rather closely. Over time the number of average hits per day has slowly risen to about 45-60 hits per day. A couple of days ago I installed and activated a new theme. Suddenly traffic to my site as essentially stopped. I’m receiving one or two visits a day. Do you think this is just a coincidence or is it possible that a new theme could be wreaking havoc on my site’s visibility? The two seem very decoupled to me, yet the timing is just a little strange. Any help or advice would be great!

    Thanks,
    ~Jeremy

  • Not wishing to be rude but your current theme does make the site look pretty dire. You might want to try another theme.

    Yeah, I would use a different theme for this blog.

    Well, thanks for the response, but I quite like the stripped down minimalist element. The problem is not that people are coming to the site and then leaving. It is that as far as I can tell there is no traffic to the site. I only suspect there to be an issue because up until very recently the site has been steadily attracting more and more traffic.

    How are you gathering traffic statistics — and how is it integrated with WordPress? Is it possible that you had added some tracking code to the old theme that you haven’t added to the new theme?

    That is a really good point. I was using the WordPress.com Stats plugin before, which I don’t remember implementing any other code for. Today, in an attempt to get a better sense of the traffic, I setup Google Analytics as well as WebMaster Tools with the new theme. I’ll give it a couple of days and see what that tells me. Thanks!

    i think the theme matches the content very well, it stands out and looks cool…hope you sorted the seo out

    Update:
    Seeing a fairly normal amount of traffic to the site via Analytics. I have a feeling that the WordPress.com Stats plugin is breaking. Trying re-install.

    Dude I know exactly what you’re going through I was averaging 700 hits a day and then last week they were staying at a pretty even 850 with 880 being the high. Then two days ago I noticed my theme looked a little funny, so rather then jumping in to fix the code my gf said I just find a new one something more suited for my site and personality. So I activated a theme I had previously installed. The next day I jumped on and noticed I didn’t get a single hit, I got several comments but the stats said 0 visitors. So it’s gotta be a plug in problem. http://www.mysterchr.com if you wanna check it out.

    Yep, there must be some conflict between the new theme I’m using and that specific plugin. I re-installed the stats plugin and see no difference. The good news is that everything works fine with Google Analytics. Thanks to everyone for the comments and help.

    My new theme at cutegeek.com broke the wordpress stats, turned out we were missing a code in our footer template that calls plugins.

    Make sure you have this before the </body>
    <?php wp_footer(); ?>

    Thanks for the tip! I actually found this on the site for the plugin this morning and it looks like stats have been restored. Incidentally, I decided not to use the theme that was giving me the problem and found that the latest theme I installed was also missing this line. Thanks for all the help!

    Hello, I updated my WordPress blog to 3.0.4 and now my traffic has completely stopped. My site is still indexed with Google. No links are broken to any of my pages but I’ve gone from 300-500 visitors per day to an average of 5 I appreciate the help that anyone can give me.
