How do I make a second side bar? I want to have a second sidebar which carries out the same functions as the existing one. This way I can have one bar on the left showing pages and one on the right showing categories etc. However I want to have these changeable via the widget area in admin. Is this possible (im sure it is but how)?

A second sidebar is NOT a widget issue. It is redesigning your theme.
If you want a second sidebar that isn't already available in your current theme and if you don't know much about designing, it would be better and easier for you to simply choose a new theme. Just being honest. If you want to invest many hours into learning how to design WordPress themes, then I would launch a sandbox blog within your domain, something that you can use to experiment with without the worry of it breaking. Adding a second sidebar to a theme that only has one can be very tricky. Just snag a new theme! There are tons to choose from.

ok thanks, I thought it might simply be a case of adding a new 'page' and duplicating/renaming a few functions but seems not to be the case, I will try for other themes since it doesnt matter which I select as I will be modifying it anyway and its just a case of getting the features I want.

You are welcome... if you have a little bit experience with WordPress themes, it may be an option... but to me, I always say, time is money... and with the countless number of themes available, just find something that has a strong foundation for what you like and them make a few changes here and there... perhaps adjust the fonts to your liking in css, etc... and just blog and be happy! :)
Good luck with your ventures. I think in the long run you will be happy with wasting less time banging your head against the wall trying to figure out how to add the additional sidebar.
