New Search! Wow... (35 posts)

Did anybody notice the new search here in the forum?
It's totally different, and instead of the usual 5-6 results I just got 892 for the keyword I've searched for!

  2. And notice the new "Search powered by kick-butt Yahoo! Web Search" tag at the bottom of the results page.

I still believe that this forum sucks. WP home, should use something really better.
New searching isn't better than before, it returns more results but many of them are duplicates and in random order.

  4. I still believe that this forum sucks.

Try thinking before speaking. Specifically, try choosing lighter words. Of course, if you consider "suck" to be light word, then I still believe that you suck.

Got to say I'm not happy with the new search results at all, mainly because they don't prioritize the more recent stuff, I've been looking for a few things and its bringing up 18 month old posts in first spot, please, please go back to the old search facility, sure, it wasn't perfect but at least the results were fresh and normally relevant.

However that's being done, it's a wonderful new feature. I love it!

    Thank you!!!

*sigh* if the WP forums does one thing, no one's happy, if they do another thing, they're still not happy, so they bring in something which is happy medium and they're still not happy. this is free. all of it. be grateful and if you have a BETTER idea, come out with it. Bitching is easy, but constructive feedback will actually show you have something to say

I'm not bitching and I'm offended by what you've written, its fairly simple: I prefer the old search results to the new ones, they provided more contextual results and were more recent and relevant, if you dont like that, bite me, because at the end of the day I can't for the life of me think as to why the forum gurus changed the old method when it worked so well. The net result in going to be MORE people asking MORE questions that have already been answered because people can't find the info from the hundreds of results presented under the new search method.

How does the old saying go: "If you're on a good thing, stick to it"
<strike>Hope thats constructive enough for you, or would you prefer shorter words so you can understand me better?</strike>

I'd note but unlike the other guy I've always loved these forums, even if its now really, really hard to find relevant, recent information

  9. Duncan, I believe Jinsan was referring to Sakis. Your criticism was very constructive, Sakis' was not.

    Always liked these forums

Long day trying to get a CSS 3 column WP theme to render properly in Internet Explorer... but I'll leave that for another thread.

First I want to apology for the language I used before,
    Sorry for that!

According to forum, I never liked it, especially the searching. I always used google to search for posts.
IMHO, searching is even worst now, my queries returned wrong results with awfull appearance.

Searches did not include the Codex which has a wealth of information. It does now.

People asked that more than 5 results be returned. They are now.

People asked for paged results. They got them.

Google stuck ads all over the last search results. None there now.

If someone can think of a good method, that satisfies others not just themselves then please - say something. Ways to improve the forums are always welcome* and good suggestions are listened to and tried.

    @podz and others.

Context aware search like the old one will always be better than search engine based ones like Yahoo does.

I had Yahoo contextual search on my site. However my related entries plugin (significantly modified from the original to make it more context aware) beats it hands down everytime. Check my individual entries for related posts.

There are many better scripts out there, eg Phorum, PunBB to name a few.

bbPress is here, and it's staying. The matter just is not up for discussion.

    why not phpBB?

  20. Because bbPress is being developed by the WordPress developers as a future companion forum to WordPress.

    http://bbpress.org/

And, as Podz said, "bbPress is here, and it's staying. The matter just is not up for discussion."

Well, phpbb is much better than this crummy shit... much.

You can always setup a phpbb support forum for WP and advertise it here if you want.

idbehold: it's been hashed and re-hashed, but there's nothing stopping you from re-re-hashing the issue.

In what specific ways is phpBB better than bbPress? What features does phpBB have -- that bbPress lacks -- that make providing free support easier, both for adminsitrators and users?

  25. Well, phpbb is much better than this crummy shit... much.

While idbehold's statement is silly and childish, the point is that bbpress is not as full-featured as phpBB. Skippy, there are many many features of phpBB which would enable greater ease of use for everyone.

It's useless, however, to complain (and to do so in a silly and childish manner) about the choice of boardware. This one works reasonably well, if without the bells and whistles other boardware brings to the table.

I fail to see the necessity of arguing over it, especially in a thread about the search function, which is definitely a great improvement over the previous entries.

vkaryl: I'm familiar with phpBB -- both as a user and an administrator. Which specific features of phpBB would be immediately beneficial to the majority of users here?

bbPress is under active development. If there is a feature that would benefit users, let's hear it!

Listing the first poster in a thread instead of or in addition to the last one (I don't want to know who posted last - I want to know who asked the question to begin with!); ability to change one's email address in profile, among other things; allowing for pre-modding if needed (seems that would have been nice various times lately); allowing for pm'ing, which would be of some benefit for many I think.... various other things I think of at odd times but haven't stated and can't come up with offhand....

And this boardware may eventually do those. I just personally never think it's a good idea to reinvent the wheel.... which is what's happening here it seems.

    Reinventing the wheel ?
Blogger was first .. then Greymatter ...

    Evolution :)

Yes in comparison it does lack features you listed, but it's also damn fast, doesn't waste space with sigs, no avatars, no 'rankings by posts' and all the other bandwidth wasting stuff.

I never knew you couldn't change the email address on your profile. Sounds like an oversight. A bug report might be in order.

I've never understood the purpose of PMs: presumably most of us have blogs here; so why should WP support provide a private contact mechanism, when that's something you can do with your blog? That's a matter of personal preference, presumably -- if it's a feature on which you rely elsewhere I can accept that not having it here might be seen as a lack of features.
