Added the tag http://wordpress.org/tags/front-end-editor so scribu might see this and comment.
thank you michael
also as to scribu’s plugin, i’d like to clarify that my solution and his does two different things.
his plugin is for editing the site’s contents, while my solution is for making design changes to the site. so in a way, scribu’s and my plugin would actually work very nice together.
Functionality
Pretty cool idea. Good for prototyping, if nothing else.
I see you can already stick elements to the sides of the screen. I think it would be really neat if you would have “snap-to-grid” or “snap-to-guidelines”. It would make aligning a whole lot easier.
Hell, you put in a path editor and the world can say bye-bye to Corel Draw 🙂
Business model
I would release the editor itself under an open-source license (since the javascript is visible anyway) and make money from the cloud-storage service around it.
That’s how WordPress.com works, as you know.
hi scribu
thanks for the feedback, i’ll try to give snap-to-grid a go as it shouldn’t be too hard with the jquery ui plugin.
as for being open source, well i was thinking of this as like an on-demand website editing widget solution but i do also see the many advantages of open source. i’ll try to gauge what the users think and perhaps release an open source version when the demand is met.
ok, i’ve just enabled the grid feature.
Pretty nice, except I get the “Busy script” error when I check “Snap to elements”; Firefox 3.6; http://demo.stiqr.com
Also, it takes quite a while to get the “snap on/off” message.
The grid seems to be working alright.
ok that has been addressed
Yeah, it’s working fine now.
Related to the WordPress plugin: you should probably check current_user_can('edit_themes')
before including the scripts, to avoid loading them needlessly.
Just wanted to say this plugin looks really cool!
I use scribu’s front end editor for the posts and that is how I stumbled upon this post. Basically I was looking for a simple way for my users to edit the elements of the theme that I activate for them such as background images, colors etc.
I look forward to hearing more about how to integrate this plugin with my current themes that I have built.
(I’m also really interested in a self-hosted vs. of this plugin if that is in the future plans)
Didn’t work for me. Nor did the demo. Firefox 3.5.8
roscolo, care to share which OS?
