I have 4 sites installed, and started out with a Dutch wordpress installation, so naturally Dutch and English are possible in Settings -> General.

However, I also installed French and German. I put the de_DE.mo, de_DE.po, fr_FR.mo and fr_FR.po in the languages folder of my theme (it already contained the dutch langauge files).
The new languages do not appear under Settings -> General -> Site language.

What I tried do do as well: My sites -> Network admin -> sites -> edit -> Settings -> change the WPLANG to fr_FR. When I save it, the setting wasn’t saved, the textfield for WPLANG is empty.

I’m working iwth the twenty eleven theme and Dutch and English are functioning. Any ideas?

I believe you should put them in wp-content/languages/ actually

I think you are absolutely right 😉 I moved the files and it works now.

I am wondering though what the language files in themes/themename/languages are for. Just for theme specific phrases?

Yes, those are for themes 🙂 You’ll see them in some plugins too. When you switch languages, those theme and plugin language pages are dynamically called instead of English 🙂

Ok, thanks a lot. I am a happy person today and off I go to the next challenge (installation of the multisite language switcher)
