[resolved] New database required for one.com? (11 posts)

    Hi

As per the installation instructions, I checked my control panel (my web host is one.com) but could find no evidence of a database or a "MySQL Databases" section. When I asked them about this they said I should go to myphpadmin. I did but there was just one database (not wordpress - it was named after my phpadmin username) and no way to add a new database (the one.com people said as much - i.e. its not just me not finding it - but then is it their own version? I'm slightly confused about this - in any case someone mentioned you shouldn't need to touch phpmyadmin in the installation process - and now the parantheses will end!)

Anyway... the one.com 'adviser' said I should put the details for this existing db into config.php with my phpadmin username and pw. This didn't seem right to me and it didn't work.

Well I'm not sure what to do. Thanks for any help received!

One.com sends you a letter with the information about your database and I believe they point you to the link to use phpMyAdmin on your database(s).

You do not need to use phpMyAdmin to perform a successful WordPress installation, but it is nice to be able to use phpMyAdmin to do backups of your database.

In that case should I use the MySQL client? I'm not familiar with it but I'll look into it.

Again, you shouldn't need to access to 'maintain' your one.com MySQL database as long as you use the information one.com sent you. But I believe, if you want to 'maintain' your database, one.com also sent you the link to login to phpMyAdmin.

If you put the information about your database in wp-config.php then do the install.php you should be good to go.

If you don't have the original information sent to you by one.com, ask them to resend the information.

What do you mean by 'do the install.php'?

Perhaps the fact that I haven't done this is why the DB isn't there...

And when you say 'your database' you mean the single existing one I came across in phpmyadmin? (The one I described above).

EDIT: OK I think I understand what you mean by do the install.php. But if you do mean taht I should do this for the single existing db then I have already tried that, as mentioned above, and it didn't work.

    Should it have?

he one.com 'adviser' said I should put the details for this existing db into config.php with my phpadmin username and pw

More exactly, the MySQL database username, password, database name and server/host.
They are right - that's what you should use.
The DB name doesn't have to be "wordpress" - that's just an example in the config-sample file. It could be anything... whatever they gave you.

Yes well the phpmyadmin and the MySQL db values are identical. In that case I have no idea what I'm doing wrong :(.

I'll get the wordpress folder and try it again however.

I feel sure I've done things correctly but can anyone suggest where I might have gone wrong?

Well, you said: it didnt' work. That's vague...
Be specific: what did you do, what happened, any error messages etc.

I downloaded the latest versions of php and mysql and uploaded them both to my remote server.

I downloaded and unzipped the latest version of wordpress. I entered the database name, user name and pw (as indicated in my email from one.com) into config.php (after renaming it to that) using notepad.

I then uploaded the wordpress folder to my remote server (after I had renamed it to 'blog').

I then visited http://mathgoesawol.com/blog/wp-admin/install.php and got the following message: Not Found
The requested URL /blog/wp-admin/install.php was not found on this server.

EDIT: Please be aware that this is very much all new to me!

EDIT 2: I wondered whether there was something wrong with my PHP upload, but as far as I can make out it is OK. See http://mathgoesawol.com/testphp.php.

EDIT 3: Also there's no need to upload something relating to Apache is there?

    I'm stumped :P

Apologies for my noobishness and thanks for your help.
