   Loading a .jpg background works, but doesn't show up when looking at the site online. Help?

   not enough information - please post a link to your site.

   are you referring to the options under dashboard - appearance - background?

   have you tried to clear the browser cache either by pressing 'CTRL F5' or by reloading the page a few times?

   I have reloaded the page several times, deleted the background from Appearances>Background and reloaded it, tried other backgrounds, made sure it is a jpeg, deleted the theme, and re-uploaded a different download of the theme, cleared the browser cache. I've tried everything I can think of.
