need to upload themes when upgrading to 2.1? (7 posts)

When upgrading from 2.0.7 to 2.1 (or, for that matter, from 1.5 to 2.1), is it necessary to upload the 'themes' folder? I have made a lot of changes to the 'default' theme in previous versions.

Obviously, if I upload the new themes, the design of my site will be altered and I will lose my changes.
On the other hand, I am worried that by not uploading the themes included with 2.1 I am missing a new feature or security.

I don't even know if the code for the theme pages changes from 1.5 to 2.0 to 2.1.

What is the safest thing to do?

It's OK not to upload themes folder, but plugins folder has a new v of Akismet that should be uploaded.

I definitely uploaded the new Askimet folder.
I also noticed that there is a links file in the default theme, which I don't seem to have in my theme. This could be why the links disappeared from my sidebar after installing 2.1.
    Thanks.

No. The links.php template can be used in case you want to put your links list in a separate page instead of the sidebar. It is an additional Page template, nothing more.

The disappearing links problem is related to the fact that drastic changes have been made how the links and link categories are handled.
Check the Template Tags section of the Codex to see which tags were deprecated and which are the newly introduced tags to work with.

thanks moshu, i checked the new links tags. i don't know how this happened, but the category i was displaying with 'wp_get_links' was '1', but when i checked on blogroll, that category is now '2'. the links were always displayed before; i don't know what changed...

now i am using 'wp_list_bookmarks'. however, it now displays the category's name (which is just 'links'). i would rather not have the category name on the page, but i can not find the appropriate tag to hide it.

    thanks.

One day, hopefully, somebody will write a Codex article or something about this... the post categories and the link categories now (v.2.1) reside in the same DB table: there are no separete post categories and separate link categories - everything is under ONE categories table. That's why people have a lot of trouble with links and categories during (after) the upgrade to 2.1.

This is one of the reasons I advise everybody not to rush into upgrade...

well, i got the results i wanted by switching:

    wp_list_bookmarks(2)

    to:

    get_links(2, '
    <li>', '</li>
    ', '', FALSE, 'name', FALSE)

    thanks.
