Need to upgrade PHP and MySQL (4 posts)

I have an old server I am trying to re-use and currently it has:
    - Apache Web Server 1.3.33
    - MySQL 3.23.58
    - PHP 4.1.1
    - WordPress 2.0

I want to use the AutoFocus theme and I am getting errors, so I assume this is because I am running old versions.

So I would like to install the latest WordPress, and realize I also need a PHP upgrade and also MySQL.

    WordPress documentation says:
WordPress server requirements for Version 2.9:
    * PHP version 4.3 or greater
    * MySQL version 4.1.2 or greater

    but what is available are:
    PHP versions 5.2 thru 5.3 http://www.php.net/downloads.php
    MySQL version 5.1.45 http://www.mysql.com/downloads/

Does anyone know if AutoFocus is compatible with PHP versions 5.2 or 5.3? Are ANY themes compatible with those (and how would I know without trying them out)? LOL

    Thanks in advance.

    Follow-up question. :)

If I decide not to be bothered right now with maintaining my own server, can I use AutoFocus with a wordpress hosted blog? Do I have to buy the VIP thing or can I just have a basic blog hosted with them, but allow a custom theme uploaded? I just bought the custom CSS deal but then after buying it, realized it's not going to let me upload anything. :\

With WordPress.com you are limited in some ways. You do not need to get the VIP hosting, you can have your blog hosted by them for less than $ 20-- a year. You must choose from their 85+ standard Themes, but some of them have a tremendous ability to change the look of the Theme without getting into the CSS. WordPress.com also has more built in Widgets than most Themes, giving you features that on other hosts and Themes would require Plug-in's for.

If you wanted a VIP thing you would need a very high traffic site for them to even talk, think CNN, Ford, and other major companies.

However in looking at the Themes they have one designed for almost any odd use. I have some pictures on one of their stock sites and I like the dark color background. I think they have some Themes that are designed with photographers in mind.

    good luck
