Need to replace Archive widget to display only archives for x category

The default archive widget is great for displaying a list of dates for archived posts. However it doesn’t take the current category being browsed into consideration.

The desired behavior would be if I were visiting /category/data-quality/address-validation/ that it would only show archived posts for the current category and then link to an archive page that would only show posts for that month and given category i.e. (/category/data-quality/address-validation/yyyy/mm/

I am fairly new to hacking wordpress though I’ve been programming in php for 10+ years.

The wordpress library is massive and I don’t have time to get to know it too intimately as I am on a ridiculous deadline on this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
