Need to redownload theme to make edits to header.php? (10 posts)

I am on the Swift Basic theme and downloaded it on my desktop. Right now I am on my laptop and trying to learn how to make changes to the header (put my own logo up). My knowledge of how to do this is limited, but it seems that when you download a theme it installs in a wp-content folder? You then need to change the code in the header.php file in order for it to reflect on the site. If this is true, can I just download the theme again, make the changes and see the result on my wordpress site? Or do I need to go back to my desktop computer and make the changes there?

  2. NO :)

To clarify, themes are installed INTO the wp-content/themes directory. Each new installed theme will create it's own directory in this location.

What you want to do is learn the HUGE advantages to using a Child Theme.

Thanks for the help guys. Would the wp-content/theme folder found on my hosting site (dreamhost)? Just want to make sure I'm looking in the right place and not wasting more time.

  5. Yes.

It's sad, but I'm so new to this that I don't know what you're referring to. I'm logged in to dreamhost. Where do I go from their to get to the folder? There are a bunch of links on the left side of the page.

  7. You will want to look for something called "File Manager" or "File Directories" or "Webfiles".

I've never used dreamhost.. so I can't say specifically. But, if you have any trouble, give them a call.
