Need to fix comment numbers after finding spam in approved comments (14 posts)

If there is another thread that discusses this issue please let me know. I did search for the answer before posting and could not find exactly what I was looking for.

    Here is my challenge:

I am new to blogging and for a period of time ended up approving some spam comments on my blog. I have since been learning many of the different ways that spammers strike and have gone back through my blog and remarked those nasty spam comments as spam and installed some plug-ins to help with the spam.

Unfortunately the comment numbers still show what they were before I marked some as spam, even though the comments do not appear.

How do I fix this number so it is accurate and adjust my site map so they do not produce 404 errors?

I have used a site map plug-in already but I am not sure how to verify that I did it correctly.

    Please help.

    Thanks so much!

    I marked some as spam

Instead of just marking spam comments as spam, try deleting them and see if the comment number changes.

    Thanks for replying! :-)

I just went through and permanently deleted everything in both my spam folder and my trash and I still have the same comment numbers on my blog.

When I checked my blog I just refreshed the page to see if anything had changed and it had not.

    What else can I do?

    Thanks.

    try:

-clearing cache in your browser before viewing the updated page? To clear cache in your browser, press clrl+f5 keys simultaneously. Try different computer; different browser.

-deactivating ALL plugins temporarily to narrow down and possibly fix the problem . If the problem goes away, activate them individually to find the culprit?

-switching to the default theme (Twenty Ten) for a moment by renaming your current theme's folder in wp-content/themes. The idea is to force WordPress to fall back to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific issue?

OK I have found the culprit :-)

I activated the twenty ten theme and the comments were corrected.
I did not rename my other theme since it was already named differently than the others. Plus I could not see how to do that. :-)

Now is there anything you suggest for getting my other theme back in place?

Is there a file or code I need to fix?

    thanks!!

Apparently, your current theme is broken.

Is there a file or code I need to fix?

Have you made any changes to the theme's templates? Undo those changes, and then try one change at a time until the theme breaks in.

The only changes I have made on my original theme was by using the options that the theme came with. I have never changed any of the code.

So then by default I should reset everything to the way it was when I first installed it?

Or were you talking about if I had changed the coding itself somewhere?

    Thanks for your help!!

Ok so after resetting all the options I now have even more comments than I had before (at least numbers wise). In actuality I only have 26 comments on my blog yet going by the numbers that are listed now I have hundreds.

    How does a theme break?
Just a few weeks ago I was able to get my site W3 Validated...
Of course then I added videos and a paypal button and got rid of some spam and now it is all messed up.

Is there any way to fix all this or is it just time to get a new theme?

What if I uninstalled my theme and then reinstalled it fresh? Would that help?

    Thanks!

    Have you tried:

    - deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem? If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    - switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems?

Yes, all plugins have been deactivated and the numbers were still not correct. So it is not a plug-in issue.

I did switch to Twenty Ten and the comment number was correct. So it is a theme issue.

I then reactivated my other theme and the comments are messed up again...still no plug-ins activated.

So now I have deleted my theme and was attempting to reinstall, but I ran into a server error and wp would not let me upload my theme's zip file.

So I am going to contact my server and see what happened and then try again.

Is there anything else I should be doing?
Or is it worth trying to use this other theme that is messed up?

    Thanks for your help!

As I stated in my previous post (based on the troubleshooting steps):

    -your current theme is broken.

So, perhaps you want to switch to another theme, unless you can fix the current theme.

I did have questions about that...

How do you fix a broken theme?

How does a theme get broken in the first place?

And is it really worth fixing a broken theme to begin with?

    Thanks for all your help!

How do you fix a broken theme?

That depends upon where the issues are. Some themes require a lot of coding work to get them functioning properly again.

How does a theme get broken in the first place?

Usually it's because it hasn't been coded according the the Theme recommendation and may not have updated in line with WordPress.

And is it really worth fixing a broken theme to begin with?

Tht depends upon how much you want to keep the theme, what the problem is, how long it will take to fix and whether you can fix it yourself or need to pay someone to fix it.

Thank you all for your help.

Much for me to think about as far as keeping my old theme.

For now I am changing themes to a different one that is not broken :-)

    All the best!
