NEED: post to contain modified version to be published at later date (4 posts)

I am looking for a way to accomplish the following with WordPress:

Create a post with two versions that would be published the following way:
-- VERSION A, to be published at x date
-- VERSION B, to replace published version A at a later date

My usage of this idea is for the following workflow:

I have a website where I post news often. Each post contain a large image, like a magazine cover for instance. I would like to be able to have that image be replaced with a smaller size when a new post is published. This way, only the top post of the website shows a large size cover image, while the posts below previously published will show smaller versions of the originally published covers.

Basically, it's like the top post is the headlines, and once it is bumped down, it becomes "previous news". So in order to achieve this, I need to be able for the content of the post to be replaced with a version B.

    Any ideas, suggestions?
I thought of posting this into the plugins forum. Perhaps someone knows how to code such a plugin?

Please consider posting a "New Job Request" [1] and maypbe a professional will be willing to code a plugin for you.
