Hi,

Basically I am trying to create a static homepage for my website with an inline logo and header, centered slider, and 2 rows of 4 text widgets which will be images of my blog categories. Once a blog category is clicked I want it to be a brick grid blog theme like http://www.themememe.com/wordpress-theme-themememe-aperio-prototype. Can someone please guide me? I am new to wordpress and am having trouble trying to adapt to a theme.

Any help would be much appreciated.

So far as the rest of your questions, you need to look for a theme (and/or plugins) that is close to the features and layout you want… You can start here:

http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/

All of the themes on that page are tested and good quality.

Beyond that, you may need to customize your theme — which can be quite involved depending on the changes you want to make. Here’s the place to start if you want to go in that direction:
