I currently have my index.php file and my wp-layout.css living in the top folder of my site. I have had it this way since before 1.5. I have never downloaded any themes to my themes folder, but now I am thinking that I should be using the themes folder and changing themes when I feel like it in the admin area. A couple of questions:

    1. When I downloaded a theme to the theme folder and switched to that theme, my site is still showing the old theme. Do I need to do anything special to get any theme I install to work? My current (old) theme is an overly hacked up index and css file, so I am not working from the original by any means.

    2. Should I even have my index and css in the main folder, or should all of that live in the themes folder?

    Thanks

Look at the index file in the download of WP. That is what is needed to use the new theme structure and, no, if you want to use themes, your index file and css should no longer be in the root directory. You can easily create your own theme using your current index file and css.
