    Hello all,

I have been using Joomla for years and want to try out WordPress because I heard that WordPress is better for SEO, I have it installed but am having trouble with Catagorys, pages & posts, and not really understanding the structure or how these work..

I have one catagory so far, but it keeps showing at the top of the page and I created a page and it also shows at the top of the template. The page is just what it says one webpage, then the catagory looks like it lists a bunch of different posts when I click on it.

My main question is how do I make it where only the catagorys or only the pages show at the top of the template and which is better to use for SEO?

Here is the website I am working on this way you can see what I am talking about -

All help is apprciated thank you! :)

Being a joomla user also... I know where you are coming from.

Let's see. Pages will store most of your static content. Pages are areas where the entire Page will display your content. Posts are more dynamic in the sense that only excerpts of the posts will appear in it's parent category.

Categories will hold different Posts. So a category of "Dogs" may have child posts about "Labs", "Rotts", and "Poodles". Each of these child posts will be written as individual posts... but will show excerpts when viewing the category of "Dogs". Then, when you click on say "Poodles", you will be taken to the Poodle Post (haha... Poodle Post).

Depending on which theme you choose, and your level of PHP and CSS knowledge, you can design your menu's almost anyway you like. Typically, Pages will always show up as main menu items. However, Posts and even Categories can be displayed as menu items as well.

Hope this makes a little sense :)

    Thanks Josh,

That helped out a lot, think I may have the structure of them figured out now. I guess my template has to have at least one catagory in the top of the template which may not be bad for SEO, I see what you are saying now about Catagory > sub catagory..

Any good advice for SEO? I heard changing the permalinks to custom using "/%category%/%postname%/" will help, I also have Yoast WordPress plugin which I have heard helps out a lot. I am looking at a Google site map plugin (am I using the right term or is it called a widget for WP?)

Now I just need to figure out how to edit the top of my sites template so it goes in a different order like Commercial, Residential, then Automotive, instead of how it is now. What is good to make or edit WordPress templates in? I have Dreamweaver, Kompozer and Notepad++ but am not fimiliar with the template structure and how it works yet. Thanks for your help! :)
