hi, i have a free blog on wordpress.com. i purchased a domain through godaddy and paid wordpress 12.00 for a year worth of domain mapping to my free blog on wordpress. i am wanting to upgrade to wordpress.org, how would i go about doing this being that i've already paid for and my domain is currently being mapped to my free blog through wordpress.com? also, i am wanting to go with a different hoster instead of godaddy, can anybody help please?
Shameless plug here - that is what my company does, but it isn't cheap. We provide boutique services to help webmasters get on their feet. Now, that aside, you need to get a couple things to do it yourself:
- hosting
- get WP installed
- then follow this guide here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/migrate-wordpress-blog-to-own-domain/12776/
Good luck!
There is some information about this on the WordPress.com site
http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org
I think the simplest step-by-step method would be:
- Set up an account with a new host
- export the old blog
- transfer the domain to the new host to point at the new hosting package. The new host should have documentation & provide advice on this
- wait for DNS to propegate
- install wordpress on the new host http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress
- import the xml export file
- install a theme, plugins and set up your site how you want it
The good people at WordPress.com also provide this service as a paid upgrade which they call guided transfer.
