[resolved] Need Help setting up a multisite blog (15 posts)

I have a blog and need to create a store to sell products (they are currently sitting in my garage!). I initially thought I could easily do this by installing another WP site in a subfolder and use the E-commerce plugin with a store template. I did that by doing an entire WP install along with the plugin and template. I put it all in it's own subfolder /store.

So I would have site1.com/blog and
    site1.com/store

That didn't work. It wouldn't let me upload anything (like pictures) using the WP dashboard.

Then I saw I needed to set up a multisite. It looks just complicated enough to confuse me. I am a print designer and photographer and don't know anything webtechy.

Can anyone help set this up for me and then I can take it from there?

Check out the site at http://www.theadventuremonkey.com

Andrea! I can't thank you enough. I won't be riding my bike today, I will be reading that pdf and trying to figure this out.

I can't thank you enough or guarantee I won't have more questions. Thank you !!!

Andrea, I have followed the instructions explicitly. Everything went well. But I have successfully killed my blog.

When I went to login again, my site had disappeared. I can't login or even see the blog anymore.

My blog is over 30 days old (over 1.5 years actually) and is in a subfolder on the server. I also have a portfolio side to the site, which used to be "the site" until I added the blog in a subfolder. You can still visit the portfolio by going to http://www.theadventuremonkey.com, but the blog is dead.

What should I do? I seem to be a hopeless wreck.

Want to look at my server? Whatever you need, I am at your mercy.<gulp> help.

  5. When I go to http://www.theadventuremonkey.com/blog/wp-admin/ it redirects me to http://www.theadventuremonkey.com/blog/blog/wp-admin/

So. I think you typoed on your URL :)

Go to your database and check wp_site

What's listed for your site and path?

Sorry that I am so ignorant, but I am - it's OK I know it.

Where is the aforementioned database? I don't know if that was something I changed. I just followed the instructions from the pdf from above.

Thanks!! I am hoping for a speedy recovery, as my site is experiencing more hits thatn ever now.

  7. Your database is ... er ... well it's your database. Do you have cPanel or something similar on your domain? Usually you can go look at your databases via phpMyAdmin, but you may need to skim your webhost's help docs for how THEY handle your DB.

Oh, yeah, I have cPanel, but I have only changed things using my FTP app. I will check the cPanel.

Yes, I know I have no business doing this, but I can't yet hire a web guru, so thanks for all the help!

I can use phpMyAdmin to view all the database info. I have no idea what to do there though.

  10. Nah, we all start out there :) Don't worry. You'll pick up the basics (or become a drunk with no hair... I think we all have that stage too).

Can someone out there fix this for me for a little payment or a free Adventure Monkey t-shirt or something. I am at a loss.

Well, I reverted back to what I had. Looks like I will have to start an entirely new site to get this to work. Bummer. Someday, I will have a web guru.

Here is the deal. Refer to the site http://www.theadventuremonkey.com to see what I am talking about.

I started the site as the portfolio site only for photography. It is a template with flash slideshows and music to show my photography.

Then I started the WP blog called Adventure Monkey. I put the WP install in a folder called /blog. So theadventuremonkey.com/blog is that address.

The blog has taken over the business. I now want to open a store to sell Adventure Monkey products.

I see I need to set up a WP multi-site, but because of the way all my "stuff" is setup on the server, I cannot get it to work.

I would rather have that portfolio site be in a folder and link to it from the blog which has become the main site. I would like the main site (theadventuremonkey.com) to take people to the blog. I would then link to the store and the portfolio from the blog which would be the main site.

I think I have gone too far as it is set up now to make that happen, or I should say, I don't know how to make it happen. Looks like a lot of little things will have to change to make this work. I have no idea how to do this.

If you do, let me know. I am at the point of expansion and want to do this right. If it can't be done, I will have to buy a new domain name and more server space and put the store on a whole separate domain, install, host, etc.

    I need help.

    Thanks!

??? Only if you want to do it the hard way.

    You have valid reasonable choices:

    - figure it out. Yes it will hurt.
    - hire someone. Yes, this costs money. If you want to build an empire, sometimes you have to pony up a few bucks. Yes, you can find someone willing to do it for cheap. jobs.wordpress.net.
