Need help from an WP Guru...Calling an Excerpt (2 posts)

For a PHP master I'm sure this is a simple task.

What I would like to do is call an excerpt of about 100 characters from one page (the source page) and have it display in a widget on the home page of a site. The excerpt will change every time the page is refreshed. The content that will be called will be comments from the source page.

I realize to do this I will first have to add the functionality to my function.php. Next I will have to use a short code to call this function from the widget since PHP cannot be executed directly from a wordpress page and I prefer not to install a plugin that allows php to be executed form a page for security reasons.

What I'm hoping someone from the WP community can do is provide the example code I would need to place in function.php to do something like this as well as the code I would need to create the shortcode to place in the widget.

Unfortunately the person who posted the question gave up before a solution was found.

    Thank you.

Like this member, I have searched everything currently on excerpts I can find in the forums, but still can find nothing that works, and which does not suggest altering the parent themes files: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/how-do-you-put-post-excerpts-on-index-page-using-responsive-twentyten?replies=6
