Need definitions of Sort Order and how it works

Can’t seem to understand how the sort order contraption works. I keep adding my images by various sorts but the picture I want first seems always to fall second. I do wish there was a little hover question mark above all of these to help…and all the documentation for “Nextgen sorting” is for about 4 years ago…and the word sort doesn’t show up on the master forum topics list.
First, under Options Gallery the Sort Thumbnails describes the thumbnail sorting by Custom, Image ID, File name, Alt/Title text, and Date /Time.
WHICH Thumbnails are sorted? Only those within a particular Gallery I’m assuming?
How can you sort the images…there is no such seeming mechanism available and thumbnail sorting doesn’t seem to correlate with image sorting.
What does Custom order mean?
Which Image ID? Where do I find that?
Which Date/Time? The original file creation datestamp? The load to Nextgen datestamp? The modification within Nextgen date? Arggh.
If the question mark idea doesn’t work for answers, how’s ’bout a link to a page or document which describes how this all works.
Utterly lost with this one folks.
