Have tried to make simple changes to the appearance of my blog thru two approaches but can't accomplish anything. Tried to change header: but styles.css and header.php don't exist in my wp directories for me to go in and edit code colors etc. Tried to download new theme but my Admin. panels don't CONTAIN a 'Themes/Presentation' sub-menu with which the select the new theme. I'm probably in over my head...

Ok, I think I know what you're trying to do. First of all are you using WordPress.com or are you hosting? (By the nature of your question it almost sounds like you're using WordPress.com, but that may just be me.)If you're using WordPress on your own server, when you log in, look at the navigation bar near the top, the one that says "Dashboard Write Manage..." Clic on where it says "Presentation" (it's like the 5th option). When that screen opens there should be 2 sub-screens (listed in the bar just below where it says "Presentation"). The screens are named "Themes" and "Theme Editor". Click on where it says "Theme Editor" to open the -- ta da! -- theme editor.
NOTE: You won't be able to edit a theme unless you have permissions to do so within the server. If you get as far as to see the theme editor and don't know what to do from there reply to this and I'll try to guide you as far as I can.
