My webhost only has MySQL 3.23.58 and no plan to upgrade, is it still possible to use wordpress.
Should I try downloading an older version?

You need at least MySQL 4.0 to run WordPress Version 2.1, 2.1.1, or 2.1.2. You can run WordPress Version 2.0.9 with MySQL 3.23.58.

Thank you. Presumably I am best off changing my server (I can do this without changing my host) rather than using an older version?

2.0.x is a stable and fully supported version. 2.1.x has additional functionality but there are no security/bug issues with using 2.0.9.

I would suggest to bug them to upgrade, MYSQL 3.x is way too old.
