MySQL Struggling (2 posts)

I run WordPress 2.9.2 on about 70 domains on a dedicated server from http://www.esecuredata.com/Pricing/Servers.aspx Generation 6
    Standard with the following specs:

    Intel Quad Core
    4 GB ram
    Unmetered 100mb/s Cisco QoS

Running CentOS Linux 5.4 with the control panel Virtualmin.

The servers getting about 60,000 visitors a day and works most of the time.

Have a popular site http://www.general-election-2010.co.uk/ on the UK general election and it's ranked really well for general election SERPs. There's been a live TV leaders debate tonight (3rd one) and like with the 1st TV debate (1st one had 10 million viewers) within 15 minutes of the end of the debate my WordPress sites became inaccessible because of a MySQL connection problem presumably because of a lot of visitors right after the TV debates (wasn't a problem on the 2nd debate, had 4 million viewers).

I got this server recently and haven't optimised anything yet (mostly because I don't fully understand how best to).

I had no problem accessing sites that don't use MySQL like http://www.classic-literature.co.uk/ though I'm having problems accessing the server via the control panel, email, SHH, but it's MYSQL that's really struggling badly and matters.

CPU load averages for the server reported by Virtualmin was 43.97 (1 min) at one point (that's really high, normally around 1).

Must have been a massive hit of traffic, though guess it's not been properly recorded in the logs.

Any thoughts on optimising MySQL specifically for WordPress (most of my traffic goes to WordPress sites)?

BTW I can't select 2.9.2 as the version number when I made this thread, highest is 2.9.1.

    David
