• I’m currently running a WordPress blog as a part of an html site and am wanting to use WordPress as a CMS for the whole site (host: Godaddy) in a redesign.

My old blog is running WordPress 2.1 (I know) and obviously I want to use the latest update.

It’s my understanding that you should do a manual update-by-update instead of jumping, for example, straight from 2.1 to 3.0.5. Is that still the case? Obviously that’s a very tedious (and not ideal) solution.

I also thought about adding a new MySQL database and setting up a fresh install of the latest WordPress on another part of my site. Then, I would import the old blog database from a backup.

The problem I have there is that the old blog is running MySQL 4.0 and the new install needs at least 4.1.2. Is there any way to upgrade the old database? I currently have over 3000 blog posts dating back to 2007 or so, so I want to salvage those if at all possible.

Any help or solutions would be greatly appreciated!

  • Hi,

I would first export all your data from your WP 2.1 and then install the last version in your localhost and try to import. When you fix everything in your localhost, then just export the database and upload to the live site (don’t forget to change the urls and other things to reflect your live site).

    Cheers,
