• Mac OSX 10.3.8 and MySQL

For WordPress theme tweaking I need an offline test/dev machine so as not to screw up my “production” blog. So I just installed MySQL on my Powerbook and enabled PHP. So far, so good… MySQL runs and PHP runs. Now MySQL is not a tool I have ANY experience with at all and it feels as if it is something that I can scew up royally.

How do you handle users in MySQL. Are the OSX (admin or ordinary unpriviliged (as I usually like to run)) users automatically also MySQL-users? There is aMySQL-root, should I create users for (ordinary me) and for an administrator too?

Confused, where do I go from here in order to get WordPress available a http://localhost/~lars/?

You may want to read through this:
    http://maczealots.com/tutorials/wordpress/

It’s now outdated (applies to WP v1.2.x), but the general principles are the same.

To horse around with MySQL and PHP do not miss
phpMyAdmin, the powerful, friendly web-based tool for querying and administrating your MySQL database.

Since you’re on OS X there are several sexy-looking graphical user interfaces: Cocoa MySQL is just one great GPL’ed example.

Best of luck with the non-production playtime. (I just love that part.)
