My Sitemap Generator plugin created sitemap with no links (2 posts)

I tried creating a sitemap using the Sitemap Generator plug in in WP by clicking the "rebuild Sitemap" button and at first it said it couldn't write to the sitemap.xml or the gz file so I kept bumping up the permissions on these files (FTP) until it did build the sitemap.

    Two problems:

    1. Ok maybe this isn't fixable but to get it to run the only setting that works is giving full access to anyone by CHMOD 777. Is there anyway around giving anyone and everyone free access to these files? Maybe I can at least reduce permissions once the site map is done being built and manually CHMOD back to 777 when ever I need to update it?

    2. The sitemap it created doesn't have any live links like other peoples sitemaps I've seen and instead looks more like an RSS page or something weird. It said it successfully built the xml and gz sitemaps and also pinged Google, but as you can see by going to my site map location http://healthcritiques.com/sitemap.xml it doesn't look anything like a sitemap so I don't think Google is going to recognize it as a sitemap and just ignore it.

    3. Quick question. Should we link to the sitemap from another page on our sites or just leave it as is for best benefits?

    Thanks,

    Stephen

    Hi Stephen,

of course you could disable the automatic building and build the sitemap manually using the button at the plugin page. But normally CHMOD 777 shouldn't be a problem.

The format of this sitemap is correct, it's used by search engines only and is not intended to be viewed by humans. With a successful ping you've notified Google about it so you don't need to link to it on other pages.

Everything is alright with your sitemap :)

    Best regards,

    Arne
