   Is there a way that I can keep my WP blog as a private diary/journal where I'm the only person in the world that can read and post on it?

   install yourself an apache/php/mysql server. here's one at http://apachefriends.org

   I mean, I've made it password-protcted, taken any ping addresses out, etc.

   Without installing it on another server, are there any other ways I can make it private?

   you could make it so that to view the posts you ahve to be logged in, and restrict usernames
