I have opened a new website using a domain name hosted at Hostgator. I installed WP through Fantastico De Luxe. It accepted my username and password and installed WP with the standard theme. I clicked on log in to go to Dashboard but it would not accept my password I used to install WP.
When I try to obtain a new password, it does not recognise my e-mail address that WP sends e-mails to, from time to time. If I enter my username, a message appears asking me to ‘Check your e-mail for the confirmation link.’ No e-mail is received.
If I enter http://wordpress.org/support/ it opens the Forum page at WP. It accepts my username and password for me to enter the forum.
I have obtained new passwords via the forum but I still cannot enter my Dashboard for the new website
I have gone to http://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password and do not understand the MySQL process.
My password allowed me to install WP and access the Forum but it would not allow me access to the dashboard
Can anyone help with my problem as I am sure it is not unique

Your login for these forums is completely separate and independent from your site login. Try reading through these resources:

How do I check my wp-config.php file
By using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides to download the file from your root WP folder and examining the file in a plain text editor.
