How can I prevent WordPress from sucking out portions of my posts and making them comments?
Appears my site is pinging itself? While that might be nice if I were lonely and in the mood, how can I prevent it?

Are you aware of what pingbacks are? Each time you link to one of your other posts, you send one. That's generally how this blogging thing works. :-)
Check out the Trackbacks and Pingbacks section at Introduction_to_Blogging in the Docs.
As for how to prevent it: one option would, of course, be to not do that ("Doctor, it hurts when I hit myself with a hammer..."). On a more serious note, you might look for a plugin that will prevent self pinging.
Thanks Handy - I link to Pages in my WPG2 gallery. I didn't realize WP treated WPG2 Pages as Posts nor that the WPG2 Pages generated pingbacks since they don't accept comments nor that WP would have any logical reason to accept pingbacks from itself.
When I put a link like this into the page "Hot Martian Women":

It generates a Comment like this:
A new pingback on the post #224 "Gallery" is waiting for your approval
