My New Hack. Want to Turn it Into a Plugin? (5 posts)

So I have no actual web development or pluging development skill, but my friend helped me hack a cool little feature into my wordpress blog. It can be viewed here:

    badcharacter.com

It's an addition to the sidebar inviting people to come hang out. When I'm logged in I have a popup menu of all the locations I've loaded into the database (i'm doing this manually at the moment) and I can set it to display where I am. I have my building, a couple of coffee shops, and a 'no location' option in there at the moment. Click the 'what's this?' link for a better explanation.

Anyway, I want to share this with the WP community, but I don't really know how to make a plugin, or if it even qualifies as plugin material (being that I had to put some code into the sidebar file of my theme, the wp config file, and add a table to the database). But if anyone is interested in looking at the code and trying to make something more official out of it definitely email me or post here.

I think it's a very nice idea, but for most blogging is done behind a computer at home - at the same time, I think it might be a nice plugin addition. I wonder if this would work with asides somewhow, or if asides could be used in this manner. Short single entries separate from your blog

Looks like a great idea for a university environment, if you log in at different places and don't mind going public with your geo.

Axo1ot1: Have you read Writing a plugin? That should give you everything you need to know to convert your hack into a plugin.

Yeah that's basically where I'm going with it :)

I looked over that link and it's way over my head. I'm not a coder, I just had the idea. Someone else helped me with the actual PHP implementation. I suppose I could just share the porcess of the hack, but I thought someone might be interested in taking it up as a project.
