• Hello everyone! I’ve been working on my first wordpress blog for the past few months:

    http://www.hungrychicken.org

Please critique my website, I would love to hear some feedback, especially concerning colors and font. I started off with the Kubrick theme and then changed out all the images and added another sidebar. I’m pretty new to css and xhtml so my style sheet is probably very ugly and messy. Is it possible to have a style sheet that’s too large? Mine is about 12 kb.

Also, does it take really long to load? I wanted a different shape webpage, instead of the usual rectangle shape, but I want to make sure it doesn’t take AGES to load. Sadly, my webhost is pretty bad also, I need to switch it some time…

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

Possible? Of course. Is your’s? Not particularly, especially since browsers cache it.

Here’s a speed report by the way: clicky

This design is fantastic! It’s really eyecatching – well done!

One little thing I might suggest is that you have a full page background of the yellow spots, rather than confining them to the centre panel of the page.

What a great site though 🙂

Absolutely excellent. Loads fast enough on my side.

Genius idea for a website, nice design. Made my mouth water.

Regarding the yellow dots background, I wouldn’t make it extend to cover the whole body, just the top 340 pixels of the page.

As for large CSS files, they’re usually fine, but you’re right to want to keep the size down. 12KB is fine, though. Image size is the one to worry about — if you can compress them down any further then that would be great.

Saving them in PNG format, instead of GIF is a start, but Photoshop should let you “Save for web” which compresses them down without losing any of the image quality. For example, I managed to get hc_head2.gif down from 25KB to 14KB.

Okay – just now trying to click on your “New York City” category, and it’s been over a minute and the page hasn’t switched over.

I’m thinking this has a LOT to do with the file sizes of your images, and possibly whatever hosting company you have maybe having crappy (=slow) servers… I dunno.

Other than that, I think the site looks great – just taking a long time for me, and I’m on cable.

EDIT: The NYC page just loaded, only to find no content in it yet?? Strange – I assumed there’d be about 85 posts given the number after the link in the sidebar… all I see is “coming soon.”

Thanks for all the comments! Glad you all like it so far…

croila and maerk: I had also been thinking about the yellow dots, and thought they cut off a bit abruptly. Since you two both mentioned it, I will try to figure something out. I think an entire background of dots might be too much. I will try repeating it in the top portion of the page like maerk said, but I was also thinking of just fading it into white on the edges of the page? Or maybe just continuing it down the right side below the sidebars.

maerk: WOW! PNG is AWESOME! in just 5 minutes I was able to reduce the overall header image size from 50 kb to 25 kb. Thanks so much for the tip! I never knew pngs were so good at compression, and thought that they weren’t widely supported, I guess I’m a bit behind on stuff! Thanks again!

ladydelaluna: Sorry that I forgot to mention, the only page that works right now is the Barcelona, Spain. I’m still working and figuring out category pages and links. So it’ll be a few days (or weeks) before I get the other pages up. I’m working and learning as fast as I can! And I was worried about my server, I get that too sometimes, but if it isn’t loading, you can check again in 5 minutes or so and it’ll start loading like normal. I definitely need to switch hosts sometime, but I paid for one year of hosting already : (

    edit:
one more thing, I checked my blog on ie (i normally use firefox) and now the png header images are darker in color than the rest of the page. Sucks to use ie…I guess I will have to change all my layout images into png files!

looks very nice and the idea is also good

Very nice, however you need to change the colour of your footer; I can only read the link to WordPress, and I need to hightlight the text there in order to see the rest.

    很棒的blog唷~
    有沒有考慮用中文寫一個~….^^
    這樣我比較容易看得懂,因為我也恨愛吃啊!

smachet: just curious, what kind of computer and monitor are you using? i haven’t run into problems with the color yet and tried multiple computers. the text should be light yellow on dark orange. thanks for noticing. i’ll see if i can change it a bit.

bluesaturn: sorry, my chinese writing isn’t that great. but i will be adding names and addresses in chinese as soon as a can to the chinese restaurants!
