Support » Everything else WordPress » My comments on other wordpress sites are not showing

  • Hi all.

First, I do not have a wordpress account or website.

I have commented on my favorite wordpress blogs but I could not see any comment being approved. I checked after 2 days yet there are comments after me being approved but not my comments.

Here’s the story. After submitting my comment, I do not receive any confirmation message that my comment is approved or in moderation. I am just being led to the same blog site without my comment on. Sometimes, the URL will be the same but sometimes there is added “comment#” after the URL.

Is there anything wrong with my IP address? Am I banned or something? Are my comment getting through?

    I need your help, please.

    Thanks.

You may be getting caught by Akismet.

    Go here: https://akismet.com/contact/

Pick “I think Akismet is catching my comments by mistake”

Thanks Ipstenu. Is that available even though I do not have a wordpress blog? I am just an ordinary person reading then commenting on the blogs if I need to say something.

Yes, it’s available even though you do not have a blog. YOUR comments Are being caught 🙂 go contact them.

Oh great! Thanks. I will contact them now. 🙂

Same problem as AnnSmith0320. Don’t yet have a wordpress blog but I comment on selected wordpress blogs and comments have not been appearing, with no confirmation or “awaiting moderation” message. I assume comments are not getting through, as I don’t have a problem with non-wordpress blogs. Finding this very frustrating and I’m not too impressed with wordpress at the moment – took an age to find this forum, and sent into circles as I’ve registered as a member, then told that username didn’t exist when I tried to login, then registered username, then told “Why are you registering name when you have already logged in?” but then received confirmation of name plus new pw to login to forum. AAGH! Anyway, I’m here, and I’m going to try the Akismet link above. Wish me luck.

Seanskipton, do you place your blog under the “website” field too? I have already contacted Akismet about this but still has no response from them.

Re- AnnSmith0320, I’m not sure what you mean by placing blog under the “website” field too – I see only one comment box when I visit a blog and that’s where I put the comment (such as this one). Had no response from Akisimet either.

seanskipton – AnnSmith0320 means when you enter your username and email, are you also entering a URL. There are, by default, four fields to fill in:

    1) Username (required)
    2) Email Address (required)
    3) Website (NOT required)
    4) Comment (Not required, but what the heck are you doing without?)

Ipstenu (and AnnSmith0320) – sorry, I realised what she meant later: placing my blog URL in the website field. I hadn’t been doing that as I haven’t had my own blog (only just started), so I’ve been entering name, email address, my comment, and a workplace URL in the URL field. So I don’t know what the problem is: does Akismet not like a workplace URL in the website field? I haven’t been putting any HTML tags in my comments, so there can’t be any problem there.

Not sure about that seanskipton because Akismet hasn’t replied to my inquiry yet. No HTML tags either on my comments.

I tried posting comments WITHOUT my URL, and they all went through. I received “Your comment is in moderation” response after posting the comment. So the problem must be the URL I am placing.

does Akismet not like a workplace URL in the website field?

Not exactly. Your URL may be tripping the spam filter though.

AnnSmith, what is yours, if you don’t mind sharing.

Tried a couple of things. First, submitting a comment without a URL – comment has been posted, no problem. Second, submitting a comment with wordpress blog URL – comment posted, no problem. But a workplace URL? Still a problem…

Ipstenu: what does “not exactly” mean? I know there’s a problem with wordpress blogs that use the CommentLuv plugin: the plugin looks for an RSS feed on your URL and if there isn’t one it registers an error; three errors and the URL is banned – you then have to submit the URL to commentluv and ask it to “unban” the URL. This has happened to me a few times, but the problem I’ve been having (and AnnSmith0320) is a general one and not specific to the commentluv plugin. From my admittedly not comprehensive tests, it seems that Akismet is allowing wordspress URLs through, while blocking others. Dangerous ground here: a spam filter should be designed to block spam, NOT as a tool to promote wordpress (and wordpress blogs) to the exclusion of everything else.

That’s not Akismet so it’s outside the … scope? If you have a problem with a specific plugin, you have to take it up with the plugin authors. So if Akismet is kicking your comments to spam, you talk to them. If CommentLuv is kicking your posts as banned, then it’s up to them 🙂

When I say ‘Not exactly’ what I mean is that Akismet doesn’t DISLIKE your URL because it’s a ‘workplace’ URL, it dislikes it because, somehow, it tripped the filter as a bad URL.

From my admittedly not comprehensive tests, it seems that Akismet is allowing wordspress URLs through, while blocking others.

Inaccurate. Akismet doesn’t weigh your URL more or less if it’s using WordPress (it doesn’t check, IIRC, but I could be wrong), and it doesn’t care if you’re using WordPress.com. The algorithm is far more complex and robust. It checks your COMMENTS. If someone is using your URL to spam (and yes, they do) then it can cause problems with your posts being nabbed as spam. There is no auto-approval given to WP URLs.

“The algorithm is far more complex and robust. It checks your COMMENTS.”

My comments are not the source of the problem. Here’s a test:
    1. Comment A is submitted to wordpress blog with a URL in the website field. Comment A is not posted.
    2. Comment B, of a similar nature to comment A but not a duplicate, is submitted to same wordpress blog without URL. Comment B is posted.
    3. Conclusion: URL is causing the problem.

And here’s another example. At wordpress’s own blog – http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2011/01/21/blog-better-in-2011/comment-page-3/#comments – there are 240 comments, many of which are basically spam (posts of the “oh very good” or “nice one” variety), and most if not all of the 240 comments are from wordpress URLs. What is one to make of this example? One of the following:
    a. WordPress does not use Akismet on its own blogs (hardly a vote of confidence);
    b. WordPress does use Akismet on its own blogs but the algorithm is not as robust as Ipstenu claims;
or c. WordPress does use Akismet on its own blogs, the algorithm IS robust, but spam comments are allowed for reasons best known to wordpress.

It does not take an Alan Sokal to work out that there’s something not quite right here.

Actually, I think the cause of the problem may be related to the commentluv banning of URLS that don’t have an RSS feed. However, what I don’t understand is why this should have a knock on effect on blogs that don’t use the commentluv plugin – if an URL is banned by this plugin, does it mean that it’s banned for all wordpress blogs? Does the plugin send the info to Akismet, for example? There are so many wordpress plugins, but surely they must work together in some way.
